Get it, “touchy” subject?! Texture is an interesting element to add to any space. In a monochromatic pallet, it could be the one thing that defines the room. I love adding layers to rooms that not only increase the interest but also stimulates the touch. Imagine sitting on a davenport (you’re welcome Grandma) and running your hand over a soft pillow. You most likely will have an involuntary reaction to start petting it. It’s that same feeling when you’re barefoot and run your feet over a cushy rug. It just feels good!
I love pairing simple furniture pieces that have good lines with textured accessories to enhance the look and feel. Your best accessories are rugs, pillows, throws, plants and artwork. Another major texture element is wall covering…I understand, hear me out. I know anyone that has ever removed wallpaper in their past just gave me an eye roll or something worse. I’m just stating the facts and letting you know, it’s back baby. I must say as a reformed wallpaper remover I’ve been courted back into using it in appropriate spaces. The choices, patterns, and textures are stunning and can really create a feature wall worth drooling over. In the words of someone, taking the ordinary to extraordinary. However, please be mindful of texture overuse. Warning: a room full of too much of anything can go extremely wrong. Try portion control not only with food but design concepts/ideas.
Just like in selecting materials for a room, I work my way from the floor up. You can use this concept when decorating as well. You can also just start with a single item like a sofa, and go from there. Connecting each piece little by little. If you go about it this way, you have less chance of getting out of control. I also try not to buy “sets” of things but individual pieces that build on each other and give the space more personality. This also gives you more freedom to make your house a home.
My number one rule is fill your house with things you love (not hoarding) and enjoy all the textures and pieces around you.
